Frequently Asked Questions
Will I save energy with a heat pump? In the following conditions, heat pumps offer the most savings:
- Winter temperatures are mild
- Natural gas is not available
- Your home has sufficient insulation
If you have natural gas available to you, we will most likely recommend that you use a gas powered conventional heating and air unit. If only electricity or fuel-oil are available, then a heat pump could save significant amounts of energy.
Do I also need a conventional heater? Yes. Your primary source of heat will be your heat pump. As temperatures near freezing, however, the heat pump will be supplemented by the conventional furnace. During the summer, the heat pump can provide all the cooling.
How does it work? During the summer, your heat pump will draw heat from inside your house and force it outdoors. In the winter, it reverses the flow so that it pulls heat from outside and brings it inside.
Although it may seem like there is not much to pull in from outdoors, heat pumps are very efficient at squeezing heat out of temperatures between 35 and 45 degrees. Because of this, you can use a heat pump to both heat and cool your home. Under the right circumstances, a heat pump can do this much more efficiently than a conventional system.
